What is "Bas Relief"? How are these pieces of artwork created?

"Bas Relief" is a form of art that has been used for centuries. In fact, if you have any coins in your pocket, you are carrying an example of "bas relief" art. Bas Relief is a method of sculpting which entails carving or etching away the surface of a flat piece of stone or metal. The word is derived from the Italian basso rilievo, the literal translation meaning raised contrast.

In much the same way, Christian artist Betty Spooner has also used hand-made papyrus, bark or pulp, formed with the natural "deckle edge" intact as a substrate (a means of producing a reaction) for the hand cast originals we provide.

As you can see from the close up of the substrate used in the above shown artwork, it is hand-made of heavy fibers. It is then formed using a molding process to have the scripture verses cast into the substrate.
After the substrate has dried, it is then hand-painted and finished in a multi-step process, custom matted and mounted in frames specially selected by Betty Spooner. Each piece is unique in color and character, and is authenticated.
